Customer-specific chain solution lowers portal scraper operating costs
At Märker Zement in Lauffen, the chain guide rails in the portal scraper for slag sand had only ever lasted six months. Considerable costs were incurred for plant downtime during the season and the replacement of the chain guide rails. Uwe Fabich, Operations Manager at Märker-Werke Lauffen and Harburg, was looking for a solution for trouble-free operation during the season and a longer lifetime for the chain guide rails.
At its sites in Harburg and Lauffen, Märker Zement produces Portland, Portland slag and Portland composite cements, blast furnace cements and cements for special applications, e.g. road surfacing cement, sulphate-resistant blast furnace cement, cement for concrete with high early strength for the prefabricated element sector, or hydraulic base course binder.

FB Ketten has been supplying customer-specific chain solutions for almost 30 years. The main objective is always a notable cost reduction, longer lifecycle, less downtime and increased operational reliability for the plant operator. Uwe Fabich’s attention was caught by a chain solution successfully realized by FB Ketten in Wössingen in 2005. Here FB Ketten had converted the portal scraper and amassed excellent experience with this. The chain lifetime was doubled, and the lifetime of the chain guide rail was lengthened from half a year to twelve years. The upshot was savings in excess of € 100 000.
FB Ketten also considered a similar solution for Märker Zement in Lauffen, although the slag sand proved more problematic than materials in previous applications.
After detailed analysis, FB Ketten offered the Lauffen plant a low-cost and functional chain solution that met their requirements and was no more expensive than the previously installed block link chains.
The conveyor chains and sprockets were adapted to the existing equipment. This meant that a conversion of the equipment was not necessary, and no additional costs were incurred for Märker Zement.
Since their installation, the chains and sprockets have run very quietly and without any problems. The chains and the chain guide rails were last checked in July 2017, and no traces of wear were detected. Märker Zement had previously been replacing the chain guide rails every six months but now as a result of FB Ketten’s solution it is anticipated that they will probably last over ten years. In the first six months alone Märker Zement have saved € 6000 wich will increase to € 12 000 after 12 months and over ten years total € 120 000. //www.fb-ketten.at" target="_blank" >www.fb-ketten.at:www.fb-ketten.at
