CEMBUREAU statement on the COP15 ­conference

“We, as both industry and citizens, are disappointed that the Copenhagen Climate Change conference failed to establish comparable binding emissions targets and to create a level playing field at international level. It appears that we are far from developing a system that would be both effective and promote fairness in international trade. This should be heeded by the EU in its unilateral demonstration of will to act. Under the present circumstances, there is no rational that would justify moving the target of –20  % in 2020 to –30  %. Instead, the EU should:

– continue to push for an international agreement which would create a level playing field at a global level

– ­promote the development of breakthrough technologies capable of reducing emissions and which can be deployed on an international level

– ­facilitate the implementation of existing technologies

– ­and ensure that European industry is positioned as a leader in growing global markets.”
