Ohorongo cement for St. Helena’s airport
On May 24th 2012, a three year contract to supply cement for the building of the St Helena Airport project was signed between Ohorongo Cement (Pty) Ltd and Basil Read (Pty) Ltd. The contract to design, build and operate an airport on the island of St Helena was awarded to Basil Read in November 2011. It is funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), a department of the British government. Located approximately 1900 km from Africa, the island of St Helena is one of the world’s most remote locations.

The cement will be exported in 1,5 t bulk bags packed into 20 ft containers, by means of a 3000 t vessel, which will operate between St Helena and Walvis Bay port on a three week cycle. “The problem we had to overcome, was that the island did not have a jetty for the vessel to berth” says Mr Temlett, GM of Basil Read St Helena Airport Project. “Now we have a temporary constructed jetty, and the 40 t crane on the chartered vessel enables the offload directly onto St Helena Island.”
